National Academy of Sports Medicine answered:The most important thing to remember when purchasing a home treadmill is the quality and how it will hold up when you are running. The problem with most treadmills is the belt that you run on. Every time you take a step there is stress on the belt as it hits the supporting board underneath. You want to make sure the board and belt apparatus has some give to it like a shock absorber to prevent the stress coming back to your joints. You also want the least amount of features and programs. The more programs, the more there is to break down and fix on the treadmill. The manual mode it the best way to train because you are in charge of the machine and focused during your workout. Since you will be changing the speed and incline yourself, make sure this is easy to do and can be done quickly so you can do interval training if you want. The last thing to look at is how long the company has been in business and what type of service they have. I think the smaller the width and length, the more you are likely to alter your gait when you are running. This leads to possible problems for you down the road. Find a treadmill that is of great quality, has a extensive warranty and is comfortable for you. After all, if you are hesitant or uncomfortable, you're less likely to use it.
