When should a diabetes patient contact his or her healthcare team?

Dr. Ileen Craven of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:Thank you for this excellent question. First of all, I hope you have enough confidence in your health care team to feel free to ask any questions you need answered about the disease of diabetes.
Keep a log of your blood sugars. If your blood sugars are rising too high (above 200, as an example) or too low (say below 60) contact your health care professional immediately. If too low eat a piece of candy, drink a 4 oz. glass of orange juice, or another carbohydrate. If you are ill, you must check your blood sugars at least four times a day. If you are vomiting and have diarrhea call your health care professional immediately.
If you notice you are urinating a lot, drinking a lot of fluids, and eating more than normal (these are classic signs of hyperglycemia/high blood sugar) call your health care professional). Other times to contact a health care professional are: changes in vision, a sore or blister on your feet, and any time you just "don't feel right."
