    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
Most congenital moles are harmless -- but there are important exceptions. A typical congenital mole appears as a small spot on the skin, similar to a common mole. In some cases, though, congenital moles can be quite large. A so-called giant congenital nevus can measure 8 inches or more in diameter. (Nevus means mole.) Being born with a giant congenital nevus increases a person's risk for melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. All congenital moles should be examined and evaluated by a dermatologist, who can recommend the best course of treatment.
