Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:

Bad breath (halitosis) can be temporary or chronic. An unpleasant odor can last up to 72 hours after eating foods such as onions or garlic. Morning breath is temporary and is caused by your mouth becoming dry as you sleep. Smoking and drinking can cause temporary bad breath; however, if you indulge frequently, your breath will remain unpleasant. Chronic conditions can last as long as the condition that is causing the odor persists.

The duration of bad breath can vary. Some foods that you eat can give you bad breath that can be treated by chewing gum, brushing teeth and using mouth rinse. Some medications that you may be taking can have a resulting bad breath. Other bad breath that lingers for a long period of time should be checked by your dentist. There can be some health issues that create bad breath that your dentist can help in diagnosing and treating.
