The types of intimate partner violence include:

    • Physical abuse - This includes actions like pushing, slapping, punching, and kicking. Generally, in an abusive relationship, the perpetrator will start out with pushing or shoving their spouse, but as time goes on, the abuser's actions will escalate into more violent behaviors.
    • Sexual abuse - Historically, women were considered the property of their husbands. Because of that, there was the viewpoint that women could not be raped or sexually assaulted by their husbands. This is no longer the case and rape in any sort of relationship is recognized as a crime.
    • Emotional abuse - Many abusers will put down their partner to lower their self-esteem and make them feel worthless.
    • Financial abuse - Abusers may be in control of all the finances and tightly control what their partner can and cannot buy. The abuser may refuse to let their partner work.
