During vaginal hysterectomy, surgeons may use laparoscopic procedures, in which small scopes and instruments are inserted through "band-aid" incisions in the abdomen, to free the uterus from the ligaments that hold it in place.

Whether it is appropriate often depends on the size of the uterus; fibroids can make the organ too bulky to remove through a vaginal incision.
