Several types of genetic tests are available. Diagnostic testing can confirm or rule out specific disorders and verify a diagnosis made by a physician. Carrier testing can identify which people carry mutated genes. It is usually offered to people with a family history of a disorder and to members of ethnic or racial groups with higher risks for certain illnesses. Prenatal testing for babies at higher risk for genetic disorders can identify changes in genes before birth. Preimplantation testing of embryos created through in vitro fertility treatments can also test for specific genetic disorders before pregnancy occurs.
