Antibiotics kill bacteria. The only throat disorders they treat are bacterial infections. Penicillin and amoxicillin are the most frequently prescribed antibiotics for this purpose. They are usually taken orally, but can also be administered via injection. Usually alternative drugs are available if you're allergic to certain antibiotics. Treatment can be effective fairly quickly, but you must take the antibiotics for the full amount of time they were prescribed.

Although the antibiotic can be chosen based on a culture which identifies the specific type of bacteria, one that kills the pathogens which most commonly cause throat infections (Streptococcus, Haemophilus and Moraxella) is usually prescribed empirically (without a culture).
