    Topical vitamin A creams and gels can both prevent and clear blemishes before they lead to scar formation, making them an important tool in acne therapy. Many excellent prescription options are available. While not recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for acne therapy, over-the-counter retinol in the 0.4-1.0% range can have a beneficial effect by helping to clean out debris from clogged pores.
