What should I look for in a dental insurance plan?
-
UnitedHealthcare answered:If you’re looking for an individual plan, look for a plan that best suits your needs. Otherwise, your employer will offer a plan as part of your benefit package. Either way, how you use it should be based on your personal dental health needs, as well as the dental needs of any dependents. Consider your dental history, dental hygiene habits, your age and overall health. In other words, to take great care of your teeth, you should continue to visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and check ups. Those who are at higher risk, such as those with genetic disorders that affect the teeth/gums or have a medical condition such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, as well as those with poor dental habits, should consider having a good dental plan to support their oral health needs.
Dental insurance plans can also help defray the cost of major services like braces for teenagers or a root canal and crown that is needed unexpectedly. If your dentist recommends treatment, always abide by that professional recommendation. Be sure to understand the terms of your dental plan so you are familiar with how it works and how much the plan pays for these and other services. Fees can vary depending on the type of plan you have and where your dentist’s office is located.Helpful? 1 person found this helpfulIf you’re looking for an individual plan, look for a plan that best suits your needs. Dr. David Schwartz answered:If your dental needs have been small over the years, you may not want to spend any money on dental insurance. Put the premium dollars in a "dental saving account". If by chance you have an unexpected need, you have the money.
If your dental needs are great, you will find that unlike medical insurance, dental insurance will not cover what it takes to get your mouth back even to minimal health. Most plans still have a $1000 maximum yearly allowance, the same as it has been for near 30 years. It is rare that one gets more out than what they pay in. Think of dental insurance as a coupon to be used towards your dental needs so you will not be disappointed.
If your needs have been are variable over the years, then a dental insurance plan can help even out the ups and downs. As mentioned above, think of dental insurance as a coupon if believe it is right for you.
