If your doctor or health professional has requested that you fast before a test, you should plan on not eating or drinking for 8-12 hours. (Hopefully your test is scheduled for first think in the morning!) You may want to ask if water is allowed, but that would be the only exception. No food, no drinks, no cigarettes, and certainly no coffee or sugar. If possible, wait to take any medications and/or vitamins until after the test has been performed.
