The main use for the drug called thyroid (Armour Thyroid) is to fight hypothyroidism, a condition in which your thyroid gland produces too little thyroid hormone. When that happens, you may experience a wide range of uncomfortable or even disabling problems, including fatigue, depression, aches and pains, hair loss and weight gain.

Thyroid has never been officially approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), probably because it was already on the market when the FDA gained the authority to regulate drugs. However, the FDA allows its sale, and it has been used safely for many years. Synthetic forms of thyroid hormone, such as levothyroxine, are newer and have been approved by the FDA.
