Dental fillings are used to repair teeth damaged by decay or trauma. They restore the chewing function of the teeth. In the case of the composite ("white") fillings, they also restore the esthetic appearance of the teeth.

Dental fillings plug up cavities in your teeth, enabling you to eat normally again without discomfort.

Cavities are the direct result of bacteria, which live in your mouth and feed off sugar from food that's left behind after you eat. Bacteria produce acid, which combines with food particles and saliva to form a sticky film called plaque. Plaque erodes the protective enamel on your teeth and allows cavities to form.

Dental fillings are made of gold, silver combined with other metals, tooth-colored resin, porcelain, or other materials. Sometimes two or more different materials are combined to strengthen the filling.

Before placing a filling, your dentist will remove the decay with special instruments. Then, whichever material you and your dentist choose will be placed into your tooth to fill the cavity.

    Dr. Saul Miller answered:

A dental filling, which may be placed with a variety of materials, restores a fractured, chipped, decayed and sometimes worn tooth. When the tooth is extensively broken down, often a crown may be indicated to provide a more secure restoration that can help to prevent fracture and further breakdown of tooth structure.

When a tooth has extensive deterioration, a large filling can restore the tooth but not necessarily keep the weak areas from fracturing.

Dental fillings are used to treat cavities. The filling replaces the decayed area of the tooth allowing the tooth to still be useful in chewing and speaking. Fillings can be tooth colored (composite) or silver (amalgam). See your dentist if you think you need a filling.
