The following tests may be used to perform a breast cancer staging workup:

CT scan - CT stands for computerized tomography. This test uses X-rays to create an image of the inside of your breast, but it gives doctors more detailed information than a standard X-ray.

PET scan - PT stands for positron emission tomography. This test creates an image of the cells in the body. This information helps your doctor pinpoint the spread and growth of cancer.

Bone scan - A bone scan identifies new areas of bone growth or bone breakdown. These scans can determine if a cancer has spread to the bones.

Chest X-ray - A chest X-ray helps your doctors determine the health of your lungs, and whether the cancer is affecting them.

Blood work - Blood work can help doctors predict or evaluate whether your cancer will spread.

MUGA - MUGA stands for multiple gated acquisition scan. This is a non-invasive test that evaluates the health of the heart. The results of this test can help your doctors plan your treatment effectively.
