Depending upon how strict a vegetarian you are affects your choices at a restaurant.  If you are a vegan (avoid all animal products including dairy, eggs, fish, poultry and meat), your choices might be more limited.  This does not mean that it has to be boring.  More restaurants are offering vegetarian choices in their regular menu.  Often restaurants will make something off menu to cater to your dietary restrictions.  For example, if you like the sound of a meat dish, you can ask if they will substitute tofu or beans in place of the meat in that dish.  You could order a few different appetizers to make up your meal.  Check the menu online or talk to the restaurant staff before going in so that you are better prepared with options.
