Common symptom presentations for patients with myeloma include generalized weakness or fatigue due to anemia and/or pain in the back, hips, or ribs due to direct bony involvement of those sites. Other patients develop recurrent infections since abnormal plasma cells leave little space in the bone marrow for production of normal immune cells. The body's immune system doesn't function as it should in this situation. Less commonly, patients present with hypercalcemia (a high calcium level in the blood) that may cause multiple symptoms including mental confusion, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal and/or bone pain.
