What methods are used to study the benefits of physical activity?

Eric Olsen answered:Collecting valuable information about the health benefits and hazards of physical activity requires the methods of epidemiology; that is, the study in human populations of the distributions and dynamics of disease. The key methods are comparison and contrast, sometimes with reliance on inferential evidence to assess cause-and-effect relations. Through measurement and contrast, epidemiology aims to determine whether persons who are more physically active enjoy a lower incidence of disease than do people who are less active. If they are shown enjoy such benefits, then we can say there is an association between activity and health. But is it a cause-and-effect association? That is, does activity cause improved health? When such a statistical association is shown, the methods then seek to verify by further evidence, to eliminate confounding influences, to establish collateral circumstances, or to develop optional hypotheses. Often this sum of evidence, inferential though it may be, will support or deny a cause-and-effect relationship.

National Academy of Sports Medicine answered:There are many methods researches use to study exercise. The best studies are those which are clinically based and have at least 2 groups. The first group would be a control group, or the group of people who do not perform any exercise. The second group will be the intervention group, or in this case the group of people who are performing exercise. When studying the effects of exercise it is very important that the members of the group do the exact same thing. For example, the intervention group should exercise the same amount of days and perform very similar or the same exact exercise routine. This will make the study more reliable.
