Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is highly focused, high-dose radiation therapy (RT) for treatment of cancer tumors in the brain. SRS can be delivered by means of several different types of expensive medical radiation machines. Usually this treatment is delivered in a single, high-dose fraction. However, fractionated SRS has a role in the treatment of certain brain tumors.

SRS for cancer treatment is when a radiosurgery device, such as the Gamma Knife, is used to deliver high-dose radiation to one or more tumors. The high-dose radiation associated with radiosurgery allows the target to be effectively treated, while protecting surrounding tissues from the harmful effects of radiation.
