Try the following exercise to help you deal with feelings of shame:
- Think of the last time you felt ashamed, or berated yourself for acting in ways that were not "normal." In a journal, write what you did. Write about what you felt for doing this. Write all the things you said to yourself about your behavior.
- How can you translate your feeling of shame into a signal that you need to create a new rule for yourself and others? Write in your journal any ideas that come to mind.
- Read through what you have written and create the boldest statements you can about the new rules you are creating for yourself.
- Experiment with your new rules and keep track of how these changes affect you.
