    Causes of a staph infection during surgery include: poor hygiene of surgical team, patient contamination, equipment contamination, or contact with infected external visitors. Signs of infection include redness, swelling, pain and fever. Patients must be given appropriate intravenous antibiotics, prepped with betadine or hibiclens and sterilized instruments used.
