    Both cardiologists and cardiac surgeons are specialists that deal with your heart.

    Cardiologists are medical doctors. There are many subspecialties of cardiology which include:

    • Cardiologists who place stents in the heart for blocked arteries otherwise called interventional cardiologists
    • Cardiologists who deal with electrical issues or arrhythmias otherwise called electro physiologists
    • Cardiologists who handle patients with heart failure, prevention of heart disease, valve disorders, and those who read images such as echocardiograms or nuclear studies or CT scans are called non-invasive cardiologists.
    Cardiac surgeons are surgical doctors who operate on the heart, valves and blood vessels.

    Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons are the specialists who treat the heart. There are several types of cardiologists.  

    The following are some general descriptions.

    • Medical cardiologists - treats heart patients and may do tests like echocardiography and different stress tests. 
    • Interventional cardiologists - these doctors perform diagnostic catheterizations, balloon angioplasty, and stent procedures
    • Electrophysiologists - these are trained cardiologists who treat the heart rhythm. This may include procedures called ablations, implantable defibrillators and pacemakers.

    Then there are cardiac surgeons who perform coronary artery bypass surgery, valve surgery, heart transplants and other types of surgery on the heart.
