    Spirulina, also known as blue-green algae, may have side effects in some cases.

    If it is grown in controlled settings and kept free of harmful contaminants, it produces no significant side effects. However, some spirulina harvested from open ponds may be contaminated with microorganisms that can harm the liver, as well as toxic heavy metals. If you consume contaminated spirulina, you could experience nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, weakness, thirst, rapid heartbeat and even death. Children are particularly susceptible to side effects from contaminated spirulina.
