Among the most common side effects of albuterol syrup are dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, diarrhea, nervousness, tremors and heart palpitations. If you experience any of these symptoms while taking albuterol syrup to treat asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), call your doctor.

In some people, the active ingredient in albuterol syrup, albuterol sulfate, can trigger an allergic reaction, causing hives, tightness in the chest, swelling in the face and throat, changes in blood pressure, trouble breathing and other symptoms. Get medical help immediately if you have an allergic reaction to albuterol syrup.

In rare cases, albuterol syrup can bring on a potentially life-threatening condition called paradoxical bronchospasm: Instead of relaxing and opening the airways it causes them to suddenly tighten and constrict -- another instance in which you should get help right away.
