If your wound starts swelling you should try to elevate it. This allows the fluids to drain out of your wound site and lessens swelling and pain. If your swelling persists, it may be a sign of infection. Other signs of infection include: redness spreading from the wound site, increasing pain, drainage, warmth and a bad odor from the sore. If you experience any signs of infection, you should contact your doctor.

Elevation of the extremity is very important initially. Contact your physician, surgeon, or visit the emergency room immediately. Infections from a wound can spread to the rest of the body causing bacteremia which untreated may be lethal.
