Moderate exercise seems to be enough to make you healthy - only 30 minutes of walking or similar activities once a day or an hour of walking three times per week. If you want to become more fit, in contrast, you'll need to expend a minimum of 2,000 calories a week on some form of continuous, sustained (also called "aerobic") exercise.

Approximately 100 calories are burned off per mile, whether the mile is covered by walking briskly or jogging. For example, approximately 2,000 calories are consumed in:

    • running three miles in 30 minutes, six days a week
    • swimming for 30 minutes, six days a week
    • playing singles tennis for 1 hour, five days a week
    • walking four miles in 1 hour, five days a week
    • cross-country skiing for 30 minutes, six days a week
    • aerobic dancing for 40 minutes, five days a week

Becoming healthy is as much a state of mind as it is a state of being.  It involves adopting a mindset around making healthy eating choices on a regular basis and being as active as possible for one's present condition.  It often begins with getting medical clearance to start something new if a person has been inactive or is recovering from an illness.  It's important to gather information so you know what is right for you.

Get professional referrals from people(friends or family) who you trust and respect.  Consulting a RD if nutrition is an issue can be very helpful in teaching you to make great food choices for a lifetime and to provide you with the tools to be able to change behavior.  Working with a fitness professional can also start you on the right track by identifying any physical compensations and creating a custom exercise program around personal goals.

Eat healthy, be active and get the most out of life.  Finding balance in life is the key and exercise and nutrition are a great place to begin.

It depends on what your definition of healthy is.  I have seen completely ripped thirty year old body-builders who have eaten fast food all their lives come into the ER with chest pain rushed off to the cath lab to have cardiac stents put in because their arteries are clogged with all the crap they have eaten and I have seen the overweight sixty year old who hasn't exercised in the last ten years and yet is taking no medications and has no medical problems.  Being healthy is a relative term and is different from person to person.  Your level of health is up to you.

Nutrition and exercise are the main building blocks for implementing a healthy lifestyle. Health can be defined as a person's mental or physical condition. Although many individuals will have a different definition of health, the key is to educate yourself on the fundamentals of healthy living and apply these principles to your daily life. A recommended starting point would be visiting a nutritionist and medical physician for a physical. These two actions should supply key insight and contribute to building a sturdy foundation for composing a plan of action towards a healthy way of life.
