Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:There are topical prescriptions, like creams with silicone, which may reduce the thickness of scars. Cortisone injections might also help. When a scar is indented, a doctor can use soft tissue fillers, like collagen, to fill out the area, but these injections must be repeated periodically. Dermabrasion can be used to "sand" the layers of skin and make it more even. The scar most likely won't disappear completely, but its appearance should be reduced.

Dr. Daniel Kapp of MDLIVE answered:Hypertrophic scars, which are widened scars, can be treated by re-excision and closure which usually results in a more pleasant-appearing scar. Keloid scars, which are thick, raised and beyond the borders of the original wound, can be treated by multiple modalities. Often when keloid scars are small they can be treated with steroid injections. Larger keloids may require surgical intervention or even external beam radiation to reduce the possibility of recurrence once they are surgically removed.

Burke Lennihan RN CCH answered:Calendula is a natural remedy that can be used to minimize scarring while a cut or surgical incision is healing. You can get Calendula in a 30c potency (strength) in health food stores or online and dissolve a couple of pellets in your mouth as a dose, before surgery and then twice a day after surgery or a cut.
Once a scar is formed, though, it’s too late for Calendula. The best thing at that point is Castro’s Scar Cream, available online at www.mirandacastro.com. (It’s not available in stores.) The homeopath who designed the formula tells me that her local plastic surgeon orders it by the case because it is so effective at preventing or reversing scars like the ones formed by plastic surgery. It helps him do a really perfect job!
Short version:
Calendula 30c to speed healing of a cut and prevent scars from forming; Castro’s Scar Cream for existing scars.
