The parasympathetic branch of your autonomic nervous system also originates in your spinal cord. Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system causes a general slowdown in your body’s functions to conserve energy. This is the relaxation response. Whatever the sympathetic nervous system dilates or accelerates the parasympathetic nervous system contracts or slows down.
