Your risk for stroke is three to five times greater if you have atrial fibrillation (AF) and increases with age. Underlying heart disease, history of heart failure, high blood pressure, being older than 75, diabetes and prior history of stroke or ministroke increases the risk of stroke in people with AF even more. The risk of stroke is lower in patients who are younger than 65 and who do not have the listed risk factors.
