Women with BRCA mutations face about a 50-85% lifetime risk. Women at average risk of breast cancer face about a 12% lifetime risk. In addition, BRCA1/2 breast cancers can emerge very young in life, i.e., the 20s, well before breast cancer screening is routinely advised. It is also important to note that BRCA1/2 carriers face about a 40% risk of ovarian cancer.
