What is a repetition in strength training?
-
Dr. Grant Cooper answered:A single movement through a given exercise is called a repetition. For example, holding a dumbbell in your hand and doing a bicep curl-flexing your elbow so you raise the dumbbell toward your shoulder, then pausing and lowering it to return to the starting position-is a repetition. A set is a series of repetitions performed without taking a break. In general, each set should consist of 10-12 repetitions.

National Academy of Sports Medicine answered:A repetition is one complete movement of a particular exercise. It usually involves a concentric, eccentric, and isometric contraction.
If you use the bicep curl as an example, raising the dumbell up against the direction of resistance is the concentric action. The pause at the top, the isometric action -- and the lowering of the dumbell, the eccentric action.
We use repetitions as a means to count the number of movements performed during a given amount of time.
