What kind of reflective gear should I wear when walking at night?

Melissa Hatton answered:When it is dark outside, whether it is night or early morning, you should always wear some sort of reflective clothing so that you are clearly visible to motorists. A great investment is a reflective vest. These are usually fluorescent green or yellow with a 1" - 2" reflective stripe or "X" on the front and back, and can be purchased at specialty stores as well as discount department stores like Target.
A hat is another great option. A ball cap, or knit cap in colder months, with reflective stripes on the back and/or front will help drivers to see you. However, a hat alone is not sufficient. It is recommended that if you choose to not wear the vest, you should dress yourself in as much gear with reflective areas as possible; shoes, hat, gloves, shirt, and pants should all contain some amount of reflectivity.
Most running and cycling gear is equipped with small strips of reflective material. These are great options even you're not a runner or cyclist. And, don't worry about overdoing it. It is more important that you are able to be seen than look fashionable.

Jonathan Penney of National Academy of Sports Medicine answered:When walking at night, if never hurts to have something such as a flashlight, a headlamp and/or reflective gear. A big reason may include if you were to fall and injury yourself. If this were to occur then you would be able to flag someone down. Also, for safety purposes, you will be more noticeable to any oncoming traffic.
