  1. It has been estimated that approximately 5 to 8 of every 100,000 people develop dilated cardiomyopathy in the United States each year. Dilated cardiomyopathy is 3 times more common in men than women, and 3 times more common in African Americans than in Caucasians. It can occur at any age but is most often found in 20-60 years olds. The incidence rate for dilated cardiomyopathy in children is approximately 0.6 per 100,000 per year, which is about 10 times less than adults.
