American Dental Association answered:In-office whitening is done in the dental office. There are many in-office tooth whitening products available to dentists. These products are much stronger than the take-home bleach products, since in-office products have more hydrogen peroxide, the active ingredient. They are sometimes used with a light or laser.
The in-office procedure is usually completed in about one hour. To help protect the mouth, the patient's gum tissues are covered either with a rubber dam (a thin sheet of latex rubber that keeps the teeth dry during treatment) or a protective gel.In-office whitening is done in the dental office. Dr. Dante Gonzales answered:Professional tooth whitening usually involves a much stronger whitening agent (peroxide) in the gel than you can get over the counter. It also involves supervision by your dentist. Usually, the dentist will make a custom whitening kit for you to take home and whiten your teeth at home, but come back to check the results and check for any side effects. Using a stronger whitening agent can result in some side effects such as sensitivity. Your dentist can prescribe a desensitizing gel to help control the sensitivity associated with teeth whitening. In addition, there are in-office whitening procedures that involve much stronger peroxide and a laser to help speed up the process.

Dr. Jerry Butler answered:It is important to understand the difference between 'tooth whitening' and 'tooth bleaching'.
Tooth whitening refers only to cleaning the outer surface of the tooth. Tooth Bleaching refers to a process to achieve whitening the tooth throughout. This is best accomplished with Tray Type treatments at home - over a two week period is normal.
To get an excellent result you must also follow a whitening diet during this time.
Good luck- Tooth Bleaching by your dentist has been shown to be the safest and most effective technique. This procedure was developed at the dental school at Chapel Hill and is the highly recommended technique today.
