A root canal treatment generally involves the removal and replacement of a tooth’s pulp. The pulp is soft tissue containing blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. When the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissue dies. If you don't remove it, your tooth gets infected and you could lose it. During a root canal procedure, the dentist removes the pulp, and the root canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it. Afterwards, the dentist places a crown over the tooth to help make it stronger.

Before starting the root canal proper, your dentist will give you an injection of pain killer at the site of the procedure. A rubber "dental dam" will be placed around your tooth to keep it clean. A small drill will be used to open a passage in the top of your tooth. Small files and specialized instruments will be used to scrape out the infected or decaying pulp. The tooth will now be hollowed out and you may be sent home to let it drain. The second stage involves putting filler into the tooth, sealing it with dental cement, and placing a gold or porcelain crown over the tooth.

A proper diagnosis will be made. An x-ray will be taken. The tooth will be numbed. After the tooth is comfortable, the dentist will isolate the tooth to stop anything from being swallowed. Access to the canal of the root will be made using a drill. The contents of the pulp will be removed and disinfected using chemicals and files. Once the canal has been disinfected, a filling will be placed in the canal space. Finally the access hole will be sealed and the tooth will be ready for a final restoration.

A root canal is similar to having a tooth filled. With a filling, the upper part of the tooth (crown) is filled. With a root canal, the lower part (root) of the tooth is filled. Your tooth will be numbed, the infected part of the tooth will be removed, and your tooth will be filled. See your dentist if you think you may need a root canal.
