    One result of increased obesity among children is an associated increase in rates of type 2 diabetes, which used to be seen solely in adulthood. Obese children are at a higher risk for becoming obese adults. In addition to diabetes, obesity increases the risk for heart disease, certain cancers (breast, prostate), and stroke.  Heart disease is the leading cause of death among Americans.

    Early intervention with the entire family is key to preventing obese children from becoming obese adults. Eating healthy and being physically active is a family affair.
