Living an active, healthy lifestyle can help reduce your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and blood clots. Here are some everyday choices you can make to help improve circulation and discourage the formation of blood clots.
- Exercise often. Exercise helps improve circulation and helps you maintain your weight. Your goal should be to exercise for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week.
- Don't be stationary. If you sit for long periods of time, get up and walk around at least once every hour or two. If you must sit or be stationary, perform leg exercises and stretches while sitting or lying down. Try to exercise and stretch every half hour. Rolling your ankles and flexing and pointing your toes at least 10 times every 30 minutes promotes lower body circulation.
- Eat a well-balanced diet. A heart-healthy diet rich in soluble fiber can help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. Limit your intake of total and saturated fat, which increases artery-clogging cholesterol levels.
- Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity increases DVT risk.
- Drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration may be a risk factor for DVT.
- Limit alcohol and don't smoke.
- Avoid clothing and positions that restrict blood flow. Tight clothing and crossing your legs may inhibit circulation.
- Give your legs a lift. Elevating your legs while resting or lying down can help assist blood flow in the lower limbs.
- Take precautions when traveling. On long car or plane rides, exercise your lower limbs with stretches, take breaks to walk whenever possible, drink fluids, and avoid alcohol to prevent dehydration. If you have DVT risk factors and are planning a long trip, ask your healthcare provider about further preventive measures, such as aspirin therapy or compression stockings.
