    Dr. Bill Salt answered:

The PUFAs are polyunsaturated fats that cannot be made by the body and must be obtained from the diet or from supplements. We regularly need two classes of PUFAs, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. In general, the chemical messenger hormones synthesized from omega-6 fatty acids promote (or upregulate) inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids have the opposite effect: they reduce (or downregulate) inflammation. We need omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids in proper balance to regain balance and find health.
