Here's a list of pain medications used to treat fibromyalgia during pregnancy:
- Acetaminophen: Generally considered safe to use during pregnancy.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin) and naproxen (Naprosyn)): Avoid when trying to get pregnant and during early pregnancy, because they can increase your risk for having a miscarriage. Considered a safer pain medication option during the middle of pregnancy. Avoid in the third trimester because these drugs can interfere with the baby's heart development.
- Aspirin: Generally avoided during pregnancy. Large studies have shown no increased risk when used during the first trimester, so don't worry too much if you used aspirin before you knew you were pregnant.
- Tramadol (Ultram, Ultracet): Limited information is available about the safety of tramadol during pregnancy. It is generally avoided unless felt to be medically necessary. Long-term use should be avoided near delivery because tramadol crosses the placenta and withdrawal symptoms can occur in the baby.
- Narcotics: Small amounts for limited periods of time can be safe to use during mid to late pregnancy; however, narcotics generally do not reduce fibromyalgia pain.
