Nonsurgical options for lung cancer treatment are considered for patients who have early stage lung cancer are unable to undergo surgery due to their poor overall condition or poor lung function, usually as a result of many years of heavy smoking. They are said to be medically inoperable. For these patients, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) can be an excellent form of treatment that results in over 90% tumor control. SBRT delivers a very high radiation dose to a focal area, usually over one to five treatment days. Severe side effects are very uncommon. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is another local type of treatment that may be recommended for these patients.
