A nipple-sparing mastectomy also known as NSM may be useful for some women diagnosed with breast cancer. It can be compared to the previous subcutaneous mastectomy of the 1970's however more aggressive breast tissue removal is performed. Contra-indications include: close promixity of the cancer to the nipple, larger tumor sizes, lymph nodal involvement, and mulicentric tumors. In general, preservation of the skin and the nipple-areolar complex leads to improved post-operative cosmetic appearance of the breast with happier women.
