In the fitness industry there is a movement towards using resistance training for enhancing function and performance. Traditional training methods utilized resistance training for just muscular hypertrophy (mass & size) and strength. That is not to say traditional methods are wrong, but that the fitness professional and end user are evolving and understanding that not everyone's goal is muscle hypertrophy.

Preventing or decreasing pain, improving flexibility, balance, and enhancing power have become viable goals. To reach these goals an integrated program that utilizes the principles of functional science has moved front and center in the minds of fitness professionals.

Among the new trends in resistance exercise are Kettlebells and body weight exercises done using things like rings, and bars to simulate some gymnastics based movements. Kettlebells which are shaped like cannon with a handle on it, and it comes in varying weights can be used to do a wide variety of traditional and nontraditional exercise like presses, dead lifts, squats, rows, and ballistic movements like swings, and snatches. It is because of the versatility and ability to do perform explosive movements that the kettlebell has become a popular piece of equipment. The use of rings, and bars to simulate certain gymnastics movements have become popular too as people recognize that gymnasts have high levels of functional strength and body control and are able to manipulate their body weight in amazing ways.
