Nasal washes and sinus irrigation are techniques that help clear out mucus and irritants that cause sinus congestion. You can perform nasal or sinus irrigation at home with salt water, a basin and a bulb syringe. You also can buy neti pots, which are specifically made for nasal washing and are sold under many different brand names. The procedure involves leaning your head to the side and pouring a saline solution into one nostril, letting it flow out the other. This process helps to dislodge and flush out mucus and other congesting materials in the sinuses, clearing up congestion caused by colds, allergies or other causes.
