A middle-ear implant, or vibrating ossicular prosthesis, is designed for people with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss (permanent hearing loss caused by damage to the cochlea, hair cells, or auditory nerve) who, for a variety of reasons, have not been helped by hearing aids. This technology is an Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved middle ear implant that improves hearing by vibrating one of the bones in the middle ear to increase the sound going into the inner ear.
