Clopidogrel (Plavix) is a prescription drug that impedes blood clotting and has been shown to reduce heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death by 9 percent in people who already have heart disease.

Beta-blockers are a family of drugs that block the effect of adrenaline, slowing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure. They've been around for a long time and are effective for treating high blood pressure, angina, and heart failure. In pooled data analyses, beta-blockers reduced death by 21 percent and heart attack by 24 percent in people who already have heart disease. Examples of beta-blockers include propranolol (Inderal), atenolol, metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol), and carvedilol (Coreg).
