Healthwise answered:Your dentist may prescribe chlorhexidine gluconate (Peridex, Periogard), a prescription mouthwash, to reduce the bacteria that cause tooth decay. He or she may also recommend or prescribe other types of fluoride treatment, such as fluoride mouthwash, toothpaste or supplements.
Over-the-counter medicine can also relieve pain and swelling in your face and jaw caused by tooth decay. These include acetaminophen, such as Tylenol; ibuprofen, such as Advil or Motrin; and aspirin. Do not give aspirin to anyone younger than 20 because of the risk of Reye syndrome.

Dr. William Litaker answered:Fluorides can be used to treat early and small tooth decay. These fluorides can be prescribed by your dentist. They can be a rinse that can be swished between the teeth or a gel that can be brushed onto the teeth. The fluoride bonds with the area of weakened enamel (early decay) making it tougher and less likely to break open into a hole. Should the weakened area make a hole into the tooth, it will need to be filled by a dentist.
