Apples are low in calories and contain fiber and vitamin C. Apples also contain phytochemicals, which are plant chemicals that may have health benefits. One of these phytochemicals, called quercetin, may help prevent cancer. At least it's shown anti-cancer properties in lab tests; there aren't any tests like that with humans yet. The phytochemicals in apples may also help to reduce elevated levels of cholesterol, which is good for your heart.

A small apple contains about 80 calories and is packed with nutrition. Apples are a great source of both insoluble and soluble fiber containing about 4 grams total fiber per apple. Soluble fiber (pectin) helps prevent cholesterol build up in your blood vessels. Fiber pectin also will make you feel fuller so this is good news for those watching their weight. Several studies have shown heart health benefits from consuming apples.
