What should I know about my heart valve replacement?
-
Johns Hopkins Medicine answered:The basic function of a heart valve is to open and close efficiently so blood can flow from the heart through the body. If a valve is too damaged to be repaired it needs to be replaced. There are two options for heart valve-a bio-prosthetic valve made of animal tissue, and a mechanical valve made of metal.
A mechanical heart valve replacement may produce a clicking sound as it opens and closes. Not everyone hears it, but you may be more aware of it than other patients. The clicking can be louder with activity or more noticeable if you are resting. It tends to be less distracting with time as patients get used to it or simply tune it out.
