What should I know about escitalopram before taking it?

Do not take escitalopram if you are taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, phenelzine), selegiline or St. John's Wort within the last 14 days. Combining these drugs with escitalopram could possibly cause fatal reactions.

Escitalopram may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions in children, teenagers and young adults. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including if you have a history of seizures, migraines, heart problems, kidney problems, liver problems, history of bleeding problems, high blood pressure, history of stroke, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor if you or a family member has a history of bipolar disorder (manic-depression), other mental or mood problems, suicidal thoughts or attempts or alcohol or substance abuse. Tell your doctor if you are dehydrated, have low blood sodium levels, drink alcohol or will be having electroconvulsive therapy.
