Look for a bilberry extract or pill made with the fruit rather than the leaf. Like its cousin the blueberry, a bilberry is chock full of heart-healthy flavonoids, including anthocyanosides, which are powerful antioxidants. The leaf contains these antioxidants, too, but bilberry supplements made from leaves may have toxic effects if taken in high doses or for a long time.

Since bilberry supplements may interact with certain drugs, check with your doctor before taking them if you're on any medication. Do not take supplements of bilberry in any form if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
