Chantix (varenicline tartrate) is a non-nicotine prescription medication. It comes in pill form. Chantix is used to help adults over 18 years of age to quit smoking. Chantix works by targeting the nicotine receptors in the brain. It attaches to these receptors and blocks nicotine from reaching them. It is also believed that Chantix causes a reduced release of dopamine as compared to nicotine. Chantix should be started a week before quitting smoking, so that it can build up in your body. By day eight of treatment, you should no longer smoke. The most common side effect is nausea.

Varenicline, more commonly known as Chantix, is a new class of drugs which blocks the pleasant effects of nicotine on the brain.  By doing this, it decreases the desire to smoke.  The medicine requires a prescription and is usually taken two times a day.  The medicine usually is well tolerated and one of the most mentioned side effects is vivid dreams.  The drug usually is taken for three months, but the treatment duration needs to be planned with your doctor.  Chantix is just one of several prescription aids to help stop smoking and the best program needs to be based on other health conditions.
